SUMMARY:Parallel Stories – Karen Tei Yamashita\, "Questions 27 & 28"
DESCRIPTION:An ambitious\, wide-ranging pastiche of fiction and documenta
tion\, this hybrid novel also serves as an idiosyncratic history of the
Japanese experience in America before\, during and after the war. In wha
t has been described as a "provocative symphony\," Karen Tei Yamashita m
asterfully mixes fact with fiction\, layering genres from James Bond mov
ies to haiku to oral history and transfiguring an enormity of archival r
esearch into a chorus of stories. With her signature wit and aplomb\, sh
 e gives voice to laborers\, artists\, scholars\, informants\, and activi
sts who\, over three generations\, defined an immigrant community. Book
signing with Chaucer’s Books to follow. Parallel Stories This Fall Paral
lel Stories resonates from the Museum’s extensive and exceptional Asian
Art Collection spanning 5\,000 years with over 3\,600 objects. The serie
s invites us to reimagine and reframe some of the histories\, traditions
and stories contained in the collection. To do this\, we turn to three
contemporary authors— M. Lin\, Divya Victor\, and Karen Tei Yamashita—wh
o write stories that are both deeply felt and impeccably researched\, th
rough a hybrid lens of experience\, history\, and imagination. This seri
es is a collaboration with The Asian American Studies Department of UCSB
. Sameer Pandya\, Chairman of the Department and author of the award win
ning The Blind Writer\, Members Only\, and Our Beautiful Boys\, will fac
ilitate the conversations. Please arrive and check in before the program
begins. Reservations will be held for 10 minutes after the scheduled st
art time\; after that time\, unclaimed seats may be released to other gu
