SUMMARY:Arline Geronimus: Weathering\, Then and Now
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Arline Geronimus\, public health expert\, discusses the e
ffects of systemic oppression—including racism and classism—on the body.
Dr. Arline T. Geronimus coined the term “weathering” to describe the ef
fects of systemic oppression—including racism and classism—on the body.
In her book Weathering: The Extraordinary Stress of Ordinary Life in an
Unjust Society\, based on more than 30 years of research\, she argues th
at health and aging have more to do with how society treats us than with
how well we take care of ourselves. She explains what happens to human
bodies as they attempt to withstand and overcome the challenges and insu
lts that society leverages against them\, and details how this process r
avages their health. Geronimus is a Professor in the School of Public He
alth and Research Professor in the Institute for Social Research at the
University of Michigan\, where she also is affiliated with the Center fo
r Research on Ethnicity\, Culture\, and Health. She is an elected member
of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies of Science. Cosp
onsored by the Park Street Corporation Speaker Series\, the Boston Colle
ge Connell School of Nursing\, and the School of Social Work. All Lowell
Humanities Series lectures are free and open to the public. Registratio
n via Eventbrite is required for in-person attendance. The Lowell Humani
ties Series is sponsored by the Lowell Institute\, Boston College's Inst
itute for the Liberal Arts\, and the Provost's Office.\n\nTickets: https
