SUMMARY:King Tuff x Sheer Mag
DESCRIPTION:$25 advanced\, $28 day of show General Admission (Standing) -
Doors open at 7PM https://kingtuffworld.net/ There are times in our lif
e when we feel magic in the air. When new love arrives\, or we find ours
elves lost in a moment of creation with others who share our vision. A s
ense that: this is who I want to be. This is what I want to share. It’s
a fleeting feeling and one that Kyle Thomas\, the singer-songwriter who
records and performs as King Tuff\, found himself longing for in the spr
ing of 2020. But knowing he couldn’t simply recreate this time in his li
fe at will\, Thomas—who hails from Brattleboro\, Vermont—set out to writ
e a love letter to those cherished moments of inspiration and to the sma
ll town that formed him. The one where he first nurtured his songwriting
impulses\, bouncing ideas off other like-minded artists. The kind of pl
ace where the changing of the seasons always delivered a sense of perspe
ctive and fresh artistic inspiration. Where he felt a deeper connection
with nature and sense of community that had once been so close at hand.
“I wanted to make an album to remind myself that life is magical\,” he r
eflects. And so\, Thomas seized upon his memories\, creating what he cal
ls “an album about love and nature and youth.” The result is Smalltown S
tardust\, a spiritual\, tender and ultimately joyous record that might c
ome as a shock to those with only a passing knowledge of the artist’s ba
ck catalog. On Smalltown Stardust\, Thomas takes us on his journey to a
place where past and present collide\, where he can be a dreamer in love
with all that he sees. Images of his youth abound: from Route 91 which
runs through his hometown (in “Smalltown Stardust”)\; to Redtooth\, a sp
ectre who used to roam the streets (“Bandits Of Blue Sky”)\; to old frie
nds\, old haunts and old dreams (“Always Find Me”)\; to Vermont’s Rock R
iver\, which gave its name to a song of a torch still burning for past l
ove: “Those days are gone and we can’t rewind/ Cuz people grow and place
s change/ But my love for you will never fade away.” https://www.sheer-m
ag.com/ Underlying every great record\, every career-defining work of ar
t\, is a certain ineffable\, increasingly rarified quality: unity of vis
ion. Great songs need not announce their greatness: their marriage of id
ea with action\, soul with sound\, appears as something which is natural
ly effortless\, unforced—they are what they are because they have no cho
ice but to be. On Playing Favorites\, Sheer Mag’s third full length and
first with Third Man Records\, this precise\, matured clarity of vision
is put on full display. Over the course of the past decade\, Sheer Mag h
ave labored to carve out a discernibly singular position within the cano
n of contemporary rock: toggling with ease between the refined flourishe
s of a “connoisseur’s band” and the ecstatic colloquialism of populist s
ongwriting—yet displaying no strict loyalty to either camp—their sound\,
while oft-referenced\, is unmistakably and immediately recognizable as
theirs alone. With Playing Favorites\, Sheer Mag have capitalized on a d
ecade’s worth of devotion to their own collective spirit—a spirit refine
d in both the sweaty trenches of punk warehouses and the larger-than-lif
e glamour of concert halls—emerging with a dense work of gripping emotio
ns\, massive hooks\, and masterfully constructed power-pop anthems. This
is the record the Philadelphian rock and roll four-piece has always bee
n destined to make. Playing Favorites expands with a sense of undeniable
vitality\, buoyed by rock and roll’s singular capacity to channel a rel
entless compassion for human life. While at times marked by an intensifi
ed sense of melancholy\, this newest offering takes stock of the confusi
ng flow of daily life without moralizing\, refusing to fall into antagon
istic cynicism. Sheer Mag leans into the chaotic thrall of city living\,
of a life subdivided by the jagged highs and lows of bars\, parties\, a
nd nightlife culture\, with sweetly empathetic remove. The chemically-sa
turated swing of disco rhythms\, crooning earnestness of heartland Ameri
cana\, and boisterous theatrics of capital-G-and-M Guitar Music become s
trangely familiar bedfellows. This music is complex\, not complicated. A
s lead guitarist Kyle Seely puts it\, “I don’t believe people should put
on a record and have to work to enjoy it.” Sheer Mag neither pander tow
ards the studied pretensions of the rock historian elite nor dilute thei
r approach into something more blankly palatable to a commercial audienc
 e. Instead\, they have their eyes set on that ever elusive third option:
those who just get it. If you build it\, they will come. Contact Us: co
