SUMMARY:Kathy Fridstein & Kelli Russell Agodon
DESCRIPTION:Kathy Fridstein and Kelli Russell Agodon visit the store to d
iscuss their new book Landscapes of Forgotten Forts\, a collaboration be
tween the artist and poet featuring photographs of Puget Sound’s Forts W
orden\, Flagler\, and Casey\, all used during World Wars I and II\, and
poetry responding to the photos. Registration is not required\, but help
s us anticipate audience size. If you'd like to RSVP\, please do so here
! Landscapes of the Forgotten Forts explores relationships between histo
ry and art\, war and peace\, built and natural environments\, absence an
d presence. Through photographs and poems\, the three forts—Casey\, Word
en\, and Flagler—that comprised the Triangle of Fire are portrayed\, inv
oking their original purpose\, now long overrun by nature. Kathy Fridste
in has taken thousands of photographs of these forts\, homing in on a me
diation on history through a certain kind of beauty. Award-winning poet
Kelli Russell Agodon responds to several of Kathy Fridstein’s photograph
s to help create a reflective\, lyrical history of the forts and interpr
et what it is like to be there now\, juxtaposed with the current affairs
of our country. Curator Kathleen Garret provides the foreword. Historia
n David Hansen contributes an essay to provide context for the forts\; q
uotes from the soldiers stationed there weave throughout the pages evoki
ng the ghosts from wars past and the relentless march of time. Kathy Fri
dstein is an artist/photographer living with her husband in Port Townsen
d\, WA. After receiving an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of C
hicago\, Kathy began a 40-year career of teaching in the Pacific Northwe

rnational venues\, including the twentieth Julia Margaret Cameron Awards
