SUMMARY:Between Political Liberalism and Dictatorship:...
DESCRIPTION:This talk examines the crisis of political liberalism in inte
rwar Greece by analyzing the recurrent intervention of the military in p
olitics as a structural consequence of the failure to establish a durabl
e bourgeois hegemony after 1916\, with particular emphasis on the Second
Hellenic Republic (1924–1935). It argues that the frequent military int
erventions in the political scene of the period were not an episodic dis
ruption of an otherwise functioning parliamentary order\, but rather con
ceptualizes the army as a structural political actor within a fragile li
beral regime. Speaker Bio: George Souvlis completed his PhD at the Europ
ean University Institute (Department of History and Civilization) in Flo
rence. He has taught courses in modern and contemporary Greek and Europe
