SUMMARY:Lenore Skomal Lighthouse Keepers Daughter
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening with award winning author Lenore Skoma
l to discuss the second edition of her book THE LIGHTHOUSE KEEPER'S DAUG
HTER. In the second edition of her book that was originally published in
2002\, Skomal revisits the topic of how Ida got to be so famous so quic
kly which makes for a fascinating look into her nature\, the factors tha
t led to her rise in fame\, and her maverick actions to keep the limelig
ht on her for over five decades. We kindly ask you to RSVP and share thi
s event with your friends. Copies of the book will be available for pre-
order and sale at the event. The Lighthouse Keeper’s Daughter is the abs
orbing\, painstakingly researched story of Ida Lewis and the fearless re
scues she made at Lime Rock Lighthouse in Newport\, Rhode Island. Born i
n 1842\, Ida began tending the light at age fifteen after her father\, t
he keeper of the light\, was disabled by a stroke. When her father died
in 1872\, Ida’s mother assumed the role of lighthouse keeper but Ida con
tinued to do the work. Then when her mother died in 1879\, Ida was offic
ially appointed to the job\, where she remained until her death in 1911.
Ida is credited with saving at least eighteen lives during her nearly f
orty years on the tiny island in Newport Harbor. She became famous natio
nwide in the late 1860s after one of her daring rescues\, and the town o
f Newport celebrated her on Independence Day 1869. In 1924\, the Rhode I
sland legislature officially changed the name of Lime Rock Lighthouse to
Ida Lewis Lighthouse. In 1928\, all but a portion of Lime Rock used for
the light tower was sold to yachtsmen who preserved the historic house
and established the Ida Lewis Yacht Club. In 1995\, a Coast Guard buoy t
ender was named for her. Lenore Skomal is a career writer with over four
decades of experience in all forms of publication. The Lighthouse Keepe
r’s Daughter was her first published work. The first edition was origina
lly published in 2002 and won the prestigious Best Book for Teens by the
New York Public Library and has been in continuous publication since. H
er body of work includes 20 published books and produced stage plays\, a
s well as multiple awards. As a theatre maker and playwright\, she is th
e founder and director of Broadway Bound Theatre Festival in NYC\, which
is dedicated to developing and presenting new works.\n\nTickets: https:
