SUMMARY:Reading: Caleb Dardick
DESCRIPTION:Annie Bloom's Books welcomes Caleb Dardick for a reading from
his memoir\, The Adventures of Superfreak: My Childhood on the Hippie T
rail. Caleb will be joined by Portland author Joshua Safran for a lively
conversation about their extraordinary childhoods in the counterculture
. From a VW bus journey along the Hippie Trail to unconventional family
adventures closer to home\, they'll explore the wonder\, chaos\, and con
tradictions of growing up with parents determined to live outside societ
y's rules. About The Adventures of Superfreak: In 1970\, five-year-old C
aleb Dardick crossed continents with his disabled activist parents in se
arch of hashish—or enlightenment—whatever came first. Traveling overland
from Amsterdam to India\, the family chased freedom across Europe\, Nor
th Africa\, and South Asia in a VW bus. Told through the eyes of a child
who becomes "Superfreak" to survive the chaos\, this memoir explores at
tachment\, abandonment\, disability\, and the cost of radical freedom. C
aleb Dardick is a storyteller and cultural observer who grew up in the A
merican counterculture. At age five\, he traveled the Hippie Trail from
Amsterdam to India with his disabled parents. He later lived as part of
the back-to-the-land movement in Northern California. He has performed p
ersonal stories at the Sierra Storytelling Festival and at Beyond Border
s in San Francisco. The Adventures of Superfreak is his debut memoir.\n\
