SUMMARY:Mr Sun Plays Ellington’s Nutcracker Suite
DESCRIPTION:Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite contains some of the most belo
ved and familiar melodies in the Western world. Mr Sun (Darol Anger\, fi
 ddle\; Joe K. Walsh\, mandolin\; Grant Gordy\, guitar\; and Aidan O’Donn
ell\, bass) has seized upon the inspiration of Duke Ellington’s brillian
 t\, sly\, & urbane re-interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s Suite as an opport
unity to salute and re-invent this wildly multi-faceted work anew throug
h the lens of the American String Band\, a musical form which contains m
yriad styles and is presently engaged in a marathon upheaval of innovati
on and expansion. Read more On Mr Sun's new recording\, the pieces of th
e Suite range from close interpretations of Billy Strayhorn’s original c
harts to intense extrapolations based on the spirit of the material. On
the recording\, Mr Sun generally played original improvised solos\, thou
gh some crucial musical statements by giants such as Johnny Hodges and P
aul Gonsalves were transcribed directly and played in their spirit. Most
of Strayhorn’s startling original horn voicings have been preserved in
bowed strings\, with multi-mandolin parts adding a punchy edge. There is
one new additional piece\, drawn directly from Tchaikovsky's Ballet\, s
etting three themes in classic “Dawg Music” format. The Russian Dance is
now hilariously full-on Bluegrass with banjo guest Alison Brown while s
till using the spy-movie intros\, outros\, and background lines of Stray
horn's original. Dobro King Jerry Douglas interprets an iconic Lawrence
Brown trombone solo on Dance Of The Floreadores\, now re-titled “(don’t)
Walk On The Flowers”. Now the band is touring nationally\, recreating t
he sounds of the album – their core quartet is joined by additional regi
onal string players to re-create a full orchestra of sound. Suppose you
haven’t heard of the cheerfully named supergroup Mr Sun. In that case\,
you’ve certainly heard its proponents\, four of the finest musicians on
the American roots scene: Renowned fiddler Darol Anger\, Professor Emeri
tus at Berklee College of Music\, who has released many solo albums in a
ddition to his work with David Grisman and Mike Marshall\, and founded t
he Turtle Island Quartet\, Psychograss\, and Republic of Strings\; Joe K
. Walsh\, mandolin virtuoso and vocalist who spent four years with the a
ward-winning bluegrass act the Gibson Brothers before becoming solo arti
st and songwriter and Strings Department Professor at Berklee\; all-arou
nd guitar genius Grant Gordy\, a former member of Dawg Music guru David
Grisman’s band\; and the phenomenal Scots bassist Aidan O’Donnell\, who
has backed harpist Maeve Gilchrist and countless modern Jazz heroes.\n\n
