SUMMARY:The Crankies with The Lantern Sisters featuring Letitia VanSant
DESCRIPTION:The Lantern Sisters The Lantern Sisters\, Katherine Fahey and
Dan Van Allen\, are based in Baltimore\, Maryland. Katherine Fahey is a
a candid and thoughtful multidisciplinary artist who combines the folk
arts of storytelling\, hand cut papercut artwork\, and shadow puppetry i
n the form of *crankies (scrolling artwork inside a box). Katherine’s Cr
ankies are often based on folklore\, oral histories\, or songs as far re
aching as the southern swamps of Louisiana to the northern reaches of In
uit Quebec. Others are personal stories from her childhood in Virginia o
r the streets of her in Baltimore City. Joining Katherine will be her pe
rformance partner puppeteer and foley artist Dan Van Allen\, known also
for antique furniture restoration and visionary art. Katherine and Dan’s
Crankie performances transport audiences to another time and place\, wi
th their authentic and personal interpretations of folk tales\, oral his
tories\, and songs. Stories and songs shift with the times\, uncovering
new meanings in old words\, new ways of talking about the communal pathw
ays that led us to where we are today. Crankies are a way to interpret o
ur uncertain times\, to draw artistic inspiration and power from the sou
rces of meaning in their lives. History\, community\, folk tales\, balla
ds\, live performance\, and environmental instability all manifest in th
e sounds\, feelings\, and sensations that permeate their Crankies. Letit
ia VanSant Letitia VanSant’s lyrics trace questions about why the world
is the way it is into the human soul. With sparse indie folk arrangement
s fortifying a distinctly intimate vocal style\, her stage presence is d
own-to-earth and immediate. VanSant’s songwriting has earned several awa
rds\, including the Kerrville New Folk Songwriting Competition and the B
aker Artist Award. BBC Radio calls her a “fascinating new artist” and Ba
ltimore Magazine calls her “the Joan Baez of Baltimore” because of her p
assion for communal singing\, whether it’s on the streets or in the clas
sroom. She is one half of Golden Aster\, a vocal harmony-focused duo wit
h Laura Wortman of the Honey Dewdrops\, and lead vocalist for classic co
untry band Rusty Sal.\n\nMore info: https://www.manor-mill.com/event/the
