: https://events.humanitix.com/sbs-sds-sba2 About Germany: Few countries
are more haunted by the darker aspects of their history than Germany. N
azi crimes continue to cast a long shadow at home and abroad. Germans ha
ve nevertheless managed to put their violent\, genocidal past behind the
m\, creating a peaceful and prosperous democracy at the heart of Europe.
In this refreshing book\, Andrew I. Port tells the story of that extrao
rdinary transformation. Tracing the histories of the Eastern and Western
halves of postwar Germany in tandem\, he highlights their obvious diffe
rences and unexpected commonalities. This novel approach explains not on
ly the country's many accomplishments since the fall of the Berlin Wall\
, but also the challenges it has faced - from the difficulty of unifying
two distinct societies to violent forms of xenophobia and the rise of e
xtremist parties. Whether the Federal Republic remains a stable and succ
essful power is the new "German Question" of the twenty-first century. A
bout the Author: Andrew Port is professor of history at Wayne State Univ
ersity in Detroit\, Michigan\, and the recipient of the DAAD Prize for D
istinguished Scholarship in German and European Studies. He has publishe
d numerous articles and essays\, as well as three books and an edited vo
lume: Conflict and Stability in the German Democratic Republic\; Never A
gain: Germans and Genocide after the Holocaust\, which was shortlisted f
or the 2025 Laura Shannon Prize in Contemporary European Studies\; and B
ecoming East German: Socialist Structures and Sensibilities after Hitler
 . His latest book\, Germany\, a brief history of postwar Germany\, just
appeared with Polity Press. Port served from 2014 to 2019 as Editor-in-C
hief of the flagship journal Central European History. About A Woman in
Pink: In A Woman in Pink\, an unnamed woman recounts her deeply intertwi
ned relationship with Dutch\, a man she meets in her twenties and immedi
ately loves. Dutch tells her he has distanced himself from the substance
-fueled chaos that once consumed him\, while she explains she has left h
er eating disorder in the past. Together\, they convince themselves they
’ ve outrun their darkest histories. But over the span of their fifteen-
year relationship\, those shadows loom large\, influencing their bond in
ways they never expected. She wants to free herself from the turmoil of
addiction. She also wants to believe that Dutch is her Johnny Cash\, th
at she is his June Carter\, and that theirs is a great love story. When
their histories and choices finally collide\, she is forced to confront
everything she thought she knew about love\, identity\, and what it mean
s to truly heal. About the Author: Megan A. Schikora’s short stories and
personal essays have appeared in numerous publications\, most recently
Exacting Clam\, Midway Journal\, Change Seven\, Hidden Peak Press\, and
F (r)iction\, whose 2022 Short Story Contest she won with her story “ St
icks and Stones.” Her debut novel A Woman in Pink was a Writing Award Sh
ort List choice for the Page Turner Awards and is forthcoming with Regal
House Publishing in 2026. She lives in Michigan with her daughter.\n\nT
