SUMMARY:New Years Eve With The Seldom Scene And Tim Savannah Finch The Ea
 stman String Band
DESCRIPTION:Thu. Dec. 31: New Year’s Eve with THE SELDOM SCENE and TIM &
SAVANNAH FINCH & THE EASTMAN STRING BAND -7:30pm- Tix: $49.50 ($63.45 th
rough Ticketmaster\, $56.50 at the Birchmere Box Office) Fifty-three yea
rs into a legendary career\, much has changed about The Seldom Scene\, s
tarting with the venerable progressive bluegrass quintet’s various lineu
p iterations over time. But even as band members have stepped in and out
of various roles\, what’s most important is what hasn’t changed: an und
eniable knack for blending both old and new music and traditions without
sacrificing what makes either potent and durable. Their current iterati
on is a true blue lineup: guitarist mandolin player Lou Reid\, bassist R
onnie Simpkins\, banjoist and fiddler Ron Stewart\, dobro player Fred Tr
avers\, and guitarist Clay Hess. Since they started up together in 1971\
, The Seldom Scene has dexterously performed original and traditional so
ngs while presenting fiery and soulful reinterpretations of material by
Merle Haggard\, James Taylor\, and more. The concept of bluegrass unshac
 kling itself from a conservative\, straight-ahead mindset seems like a g
iven now\, when some of its biggest stars fill stadiums and cross over w
ith mainstream audiences\, but the continued presence of the Scene acts
as a reminder that it wasn’t always so. Even if their playing style feel
s more at home in intimate clubs\, where the audience can feel their exu
berance radiating from the stage\, the Scene’s elastic relationship to g
enre established an important precedent that encouraged their contempora
ries and allowed bluegrass bands to expand their repertoire in ways that
laid the groundwork for today’s bluegrass boom. Long live The Seldom Sc
ene! Soaring harmonies\, high energy instrumentals\, and heartfelt origi
nals punctuate each performance of the Eastman String Band. Tim and Sava
nnah Finch began playing music together at the Friday night jams once he
ld at Tims’ music store\, “Good Deale Bluegrass” in Deale\, Md. After th
ey married in 2003\, they went on to play multiple private events\, wedd
ings\, and now perform at some of the Mid-Atlantic’s most prominent venu
es. Together they have released 2 all original albums. Artist Website: h
