SUMMARY:Improv Quilting (aka ‘slow stitch’) Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a workshop where you will dive into more juicy fa
bric than you can imagine\, as we offer up the vintage\, the special\, t
he lovely\, the cotton\, the linen and the silk\, all for your slow-stit
ching pleasure. We won’t be using machines but turning our minds and our
hands towards an improvisational panel that is created stitch by stitch
. Students will be introduced to the joy of hand-stitching a piece of wo
rk\, sharing fabric in a unique way\, as well as mending techniques for
tiny repairs. An afternoon spent with like-minded creatives\, all focuse
d on this meditative stitching is a fabulous kind of day! This is a proc
ess-oriented workshop\, wherein students will develop their work intuiti
vely by choosing fabric colors and textures while we discuss both improv
isational and dedicated design concepts to approach their finished piece
. All materials provided as part of the days’ work\, but as with all wor
kshops I teach\, if students have personal materials they’d like to inco
rporate or share\, they may bring them along. *Depending on fabric cuts\
, each student will create a panel that is approximately 12”x12” or larg
er – perfect for turning into a pillow or hanging for display. Other too
ls\, only if you already own them\, you may want to bring along: Glasses
\, Thimble\, Tiny scissors\, Needle threader Space is very limited! Moll
y C. Meng studied literature with a personal minor in collecting other p
eople's lives. An obsession with old ledgers\, vintage photos. and every
single discarded book that exists\, her work reimagines the untold stor
ies behind the otherwise forgotten items of every day. A self-taught art
ist\, the medium of collage in both paper and textiles is Molly's domina
nt form of communicating. She successfully weaves the elements of epheme
ra and storytelling into each piece she creates. The spectacular beauty
of the ordinary is elevated with detail in her work. Molly's work has sh
own nationally in both museums and galleries located in New York\, San F
rancisco\, Los Angeles\, Wisconsin and Montana. She has produced large s
cale commissions for interior designers\, personal homes and a number of
Prometheus apartment complexes in Northern California. Other than creat
ing her own artwork\, Molly helps adults and young people lean into thei
r unique talent by teaching creative workshops around the U.S. as well a
s on an annual retreat in the South of France. Molly C. Meng is currentl
y living and working in Portsmouth\, New Hampshire. LIVE MUSIC POETRY &
