SUMMARY:The Joys of Disco II: 1V1 Waacking Contest and Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Join NYC street dance community for a vibrant waacking/punkin
g/posing dance competition that centers and celebrates the queer/trans B
lack\, Latinx\, and Asian legacy of disco. Punking (later evolving into
whacking or waacking) is a dance style that originated in the gay disco
clubs of Los Angeles\, California and was inspired by drag queens\, comi
cs\, and old Hollywood films and actresses. Dancers will battle it out t
o the best of underground disco\, honoring the dancestors of the past an
d creating a deeper connection within LGBTQ+ community in NYC in the pre
sent. Expect shocking performances\, the opportunity to party to the bes
t music of the 1970s\, and a breathtaking battle in an affirming environ
ment that uplifts queer/trans people of color. This battle will also be
an educational/historical event where we would showcase clips of Waackin
g during the old school and resurgence eras in between the dance bracket
