SUMMARY:Cornelius
DESCRIPTION:Cornelius Bio For more than three decades\, Cornelius has occ
upied a singular space in contemporary music. The long-running project o
f Japanese musician\, producer and composer Keigo Oyamada\, Cornelius em
erged in the early 1990s following the dissolution of Tokyo pop group Fl
ipper’s Guitar\, before becoming one of the most distinctive and forward
-thinking names in modern experimental pop. International breakthrough F
antasma (1997) established Oyamada as a restless sonic architect\, stitc
hing together psychedelic pop\, electronic music\, musique concrète\, hi
 p hop and avant-garde composition into something playful\, hyper-detaile
d and impossible to pin down. The album became a cult touchstone\, while
subsequent releases including Point and Sensuous further expanded his i
ntricate\, cinematic sound. Alongside his own records\, Oyamada has coll
aborated with artists including Blur\, Beck\, MGMT\, James Brown and Yok
o Ono\, while his precision-synchronised live shows have long blurred th
e line between concert and audiovisual installation. Nearly three decade
s later\, Fantasma B-side “Typewrite Lesson” has also found a new genera
tion of listeners\, recently going viral on TikTok and receiving support
from artists including Rosalía. Yet ‘REFRACTIONS’ feels less like a con
tinuation than the beginning of another transformation. Written between
2024 and the end of 2025\, the album explores ideas of perception\, shif
ting realities\, memory and interconnected consciousness\, not through o
vert narrative but through structure\, texture and movement itself. “As
the world and my surroundings changed at an intense speed\, I think all
of that inevitably shaped this work\,” Oyamada explains. “Rather than ex
pressing these ideas directly\, I approached them structurally — explori
ng continuity\, transformation\, and multiple coexisting states within a
single\, uninterrupted flow of time.” That sense of fluidity runs throu
ghout ‘REFRACTIONS’ . Songs dissolve and reform\, melodies appear like h
alf-remembered signals before refracting into new shapes\, while acousti
c instrumentation\, digital manipulation and spectral electronics coexis
t in constantly shifting balance. At times intimate and weightless\; els
ewhere disorienting and densely layered\, the album feels like fragments
of parallel realities briefly overlapping. The album also marks a move
outward. Where previous records such as Mellow Waves and Dream In Dream
 often carried a solitary\, inward-facing quality\, Refractions was consc
iously shaped through collaboration and exchange. “This time\, instead o
f turning inward\, I wanted to open the work through interaction with ot
hers\,” says Oyamada. “I’ve come to feel more strongly that reality is n
ot something completed within oneself\, but something shaped through rel
ationships and exchanges.” Among those collaborators is longtime friend
Sean Ono Lennon\, who contributes lyrics and vocals to lead single “Aeon
s”. Their creative relationship stretches back to the late 1990s\, when
Oyamada first encountered Lennon’s debut Into the Sun and recognised a k
indred sensibility in its adventurous melodic language and experimental
pop instincts. “Whenever we work together\, I’m always struck by the bre
adth of his musical talent\,” Oyamada says. “Ideas naturally move beyond
the boundaries of what either of us initially imagined.” Lennon describ
es their collaboration simply: “I’m always honoured to work with Keigo\,
he’s one of my favorite humans on the Earth Planet!” Elsewhere\, Brazil
ian-American icon Arto Lindsay contributes his distinctive balance of fr
agility\, abstraction and angularity to “Bad Advice”\, while Bid of The
Monochrome Set provides lyrics and vocals on “You Make Me Cyborg”. Longt
ime collaborator Shintaro Sakamoto also contributes lyrics. Despite its
conceptual undercurrents\, ‘REFRACTIONS’ never feels cold or cerebral. I
t possesses the curiosity\, playfulness and emotional openness that have
always made Cornelius’ music so enduring\, drawing on psychedelic pop\,
ambient music\, Brazilian tropicália\, kosmische experimentation and mi
nimalist composition without settling into any one genre. What emerges i
s not a fixed statement\, but something fluid and alive: music that bend
s time\, folds memory into the present\, and continually transforms as i
t moves forward. ‘REFRACTIONS’ marks the start of a remarkable new chapt
er for Cornelius\, an artist who remains entirely singular in contempora
ry music. ‘REFRACTIONS’ is available online now\, with physical copies a
vailable to pre-order through all good record stores ‘‘Refractions’’ alb
