SUMMARY:Mozart & Shostakovich
DESCRIPTION:Zlatomir Fung\, the youngest cellist to win first prize at th
e International Tchaikovsky Competition\, takes the stage with Shostakov
ich’s first cello concerto\, one of the finest pieces in all of the cell
o repertoire. Shostakovich dedicated his chamber symphony (originally hi
s eighth string quartet\, performed here with Rudolf Barshai’s orchestra
tion for strings) “in memory of victims of fascism and war\,” though its
emotional music suggests a more autobiographical story. Led by former M
SO Resident Conductor Yaniv Danur\, these concerts are bookended with mu
sic by Mozart\, beginning with the overture to his gossipy opera The Mar
riage of Figaro and ending with his inventive “Linz” symphony\, composed
in a quick four days after a last minute request for a concert during a
visit to Linz\, Austria. How you’ll feel: astonished by two of orchestr
 al music’s greatest composers\n\nMore info: https://www.mso.org/concerts
