SUMMARY:Scratching the Surface: Sgraffito Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Sgraffito is a ceramics technique of carving a design through
a surface layer of colored material to reveal the contrasting clay body
underneath. In this workshop\, LUX Artist-in- Residence José Galván Mar
tínez will instruct participants on how to use a variety of tools to scr
atch or carve a design through the top layer of color to achieve illustr
ative and graphic surfaces. Participants will get to choose from various
forms premade by the instructor and will have the opportunity to carve
into both leather hard and bone-dry clay (masks will be provided when ca
rving into bone dry clay). Using different colored terra sigillatas and
underglazes\, participants will be able to apply their own surface color
\, and will also learn about compositional elements considering the rela
tionship between surface and form. Participants will have the option to
either have their work clear glazed or unglazed. All materials and kiln
firings are included. No experience necessary. This workshop is for Adul
ts 16+. Pre-registration is required. NOTE: An art class or workshop run
ning is contingent on a minimum of 3 participants being enrolled 48 hour
s prior to the scheduled class/workshop. Cancellation notices will be em
ailed\, and you may respond with an alternate class/workshop choice or r
equest a refund. You’re encouraged to invite a friend to ensure that you
 r class/workshop runs.\n\nMore info: https://www.luxcenter.org/programs/
