SUMMARY:Miriam Pawel California Dreams: The Making and Remaking of the Un
 iversity of California
DESCRIPTION:Miriam Pawel in conversation with Peter Richardson Bloomsbury
Books and City Lights celebrate the publication of California Dreams: T
he Making and Remaking of the University of California By Miriam Pawel P
ublished by Bloomsbury Publishing Pulitzer Prize winner Miriam Pawel’s e
pic history of one of the world’s elite public universities\, its sweepi
ng social impact\, and hopeful lessons about endurance in troubled times
. Distinguished by its founding mission as an engine of upward mobility\
, the University of California-a constitutionally independent public tru
st-is a great American experiment that has persevered through fraught ba
ttles over access\, funding\, and leadership. The University has been at
the nexus of nearly every public policy debate and social movement sinc
e the Civil War\, from women’s rights to student protests\, from academi
c freedom to affirmative action\, shaping policies that reverberate thro
ughout the United States. California Dreams narrates UC’s rise and resil
ience through the lens of those whose lives it has transformed-in partic
ular\, five pioneering graduates whose diverse paths underscore why the
University remains\, in the words of Berkeley graduate Joan Didion\, “Ca
lifornia’s best idea of itself.” At a time of staggering inequality and
uncertainty\, as higher education faces unprecedented threats\, that rol
e has never been more crucial. Drawing on extensive research in ten arch
ives and dozens of interviews\, California Dreams weaves together the li
nked history of the school and state in all its drama\, significance\, a
nd humanity\; the result is a magisterial narrative of both a remarkable
public institution of higher education\, and also California itself. Mi
riam Pawel is the author of The Browns of California\, winner of the Cal
ifornia Book Award Gold Medal\; The Crusades of Cesar Chavez\, a Nationa
l Book Critics Circle Award finalist\; and The Union of Their Dreams. A
Pulitzer Prize–winning editor and reporter\, she spent twenty-five years
at Newsday and the Los Angeles Times. For this book\, she was awarded a
National Endowment for the Humanities Public Scholar Fellowship and was
named a fellow at the Harvard Radcliffe Institute. She lives in Souther
n California. Peter Richardson is the author of critically acclaimed boo
ks about Rolling Stone magazine\, Hunter S. Thompson\, the Grateful Dead
\, Ramparts magazine\, and Carey McWilliams. His essays have appeared in
The Nation\, The New Republic\, the Los Angeles Times\, San Francisco C
hronicle\, Literary Hub\, and many other outlets. From 2006 to 2023\, he
taught at San Francisco State University and has also taught at the Uni
versity of North Texas. He has a Ph.D. in English from the University of
California\, Berkeley. This event is made possible by support from the
 City Lights Foundation.\n\nTickets: https://citylights.com/events/miriam
