SUMMARY:Cosmo Whyte: Under the Quiet\, Beyond the Eye
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Srimoyee Mitra Stamps Gallery kicks off the fall 2
026 semester with an ambitious mid-career survey of interdisciplinary ar
tist Cosmo Whyte. Born and raised in Jamaica\, Whyte completed a BFA fro
m Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan.
He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architect
ure\, UCLA. This exhibition brings together two central concerns that an
imate Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive\, both personal and publi
c\, as a site of disturbance\; and migration as a lived experience of re
fuge\, refusal\, and reinvention. In Whyte’s work\, the archive is nev
er static or neutral. Rather\, it is a contested space where official hi
stories encounter memory\, inheritance\, and the fragments of stories ca
rried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interst
itial terrain\, between what has been recorded and what has been remembe
red\, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte inv
ites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layer
ed cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest cause
d by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations. In an era
of intensified border politics and renewed debates over national identi
 ty\, Whyte’s work offers a timely meditation on memory\, movement\, an
d belonging. Presented with support from the U-M Institute for Humanitie
s\, the U-M LSA Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\, and th
 e U-M Library.\n\nMore info: https://events.umich.edu/event/149541\n\nht
