SUMMARY:Job Dekker\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:Artwork courtesy of Darci Ott\, "Small but Mighty" The Huntsm
an Cancer Institute Seminar Series brings nationally and internationally
recognized scientists to present their achievements and educate our Can
cer Center community about basic and translational research\, prevention
\, and treatment. The series also highlights significant new cancer adva
nces by colleagues in Utah. Unless otherwise noted\, seminars will be he
ld on Wednesdays at 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM in the Huntsman Cancer Institute R
esearch South Building 1st Floor Auditorium with a pre-seminar reception
at 3:30 PM. "We interact with billions of microbes in a day\, yet some
of the most influential ones call us home. While some people believe mic
robes to be gross\, scary\, or harmful\, there are actually many benefic
ial\, commensal gut bacteria that protect us from disease. I study the b
acteria known as Turicibacter and how it produces fats to prevent its ho
st from metabolic disease. Indeed\, the fats made from these small heroe
s prevent us from making too many fats of our own and becoming overweigh
t or obese. This acrylic painting entitled "Small But Mighty: Turicibact
er and its Fats" depicts my artist's rendition of Turicibacter as seen u
nder the confocal microscope (top) and getting more magnified as seen wi
th transmission electron microscopy (bottom)\, while floating to the sur
face are lipid droplets containing those protective fats produced by Tur
icibacter (middle). Interested in learning more? Read about Turicibacter
