SUMMARY:Sarah Bruhn Holding Home
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening with local RI author\, Dr. Sarah Bruhn
\, to discuss her latest book HOLDING ON TO HOME: Immigrant Women and th
e Promise of Sanctuary. Sarah will be in conversation with Yolanda Macia
s\, Associate Director and Co-Founder of Conexión Latina. This event is
free and open to all. We kindly ask you to RSVP and share with your frie
nds. Over twenty million Americans live in cities that have passed sanct
uary policies to protect the rights of immigrants and their families. Ho
wever\, contentious public conversations surrounding sanctuary obscure w
hat these policies actually mean to the immigrants they purport to serve
\, making it hard to see what strengthens the power of sanctuary and wha
t undermines its protections. Holding On to Home\, based on five years o
f fieldwork and over one hundred in-depth interviews\, illuminates how i
 mmigrant women’s care work—in their families\, schools\, and communities
—makes real the promise of sanctuary. Through their resistive care work\
, immigrant women weave together an enduring fabric of protection that t
ransforms inclusive policies into meaningful practices that support immi
grant mothers as they nurture their children and loved ones. Holding On
to Home reveals how these women confront both overt threats to sanctuary
—anti-immigrant policies and increasingly violent and arbitrary immigrat
ion enforcement—alongside a less obvious threat to sanctuary\, but one t
hat widens inequality in our urban landscapes: gentrification. Tracing t
he meaning of sanctuary across shifting political contexts\, Sarah Bruhn
powerfully demonstrates how immigrant women resist these forces of excl
usion to lay claim to their right to create a home and to belong in our
shared cities. Dr. Sarah Bruhn is a researcher\, teacher\, and writer fo
cusing on how public policies impact immigrant families\, shaping their
opportunities for inclusion in the United States. Her book\, Holding On
to Home: Immigrant Women and the Promise of Sanctuary\, examines how imm
igrant women use their carework – in their families\, schools\, and comm
unities – to make real the protections of sanctuary\, even in the face o
f an anti-immigrant federal government and rapidly rising housing costs.
Sarah received her PhD in Education from Harvard University. She grew u
p in Middletown\, Rhode Island and started her career as a public-school
teacher in Washington\, DC and Dearborn Heights\, Michigan. Her student
s continue to motivate her work today. Sarah is the proud mother of thre
e kids and two cats and loves swimming in the ocean\, any chance she can
get\, any time of year. Yolanda “Yoli” Macías\, a native of Mexico City
\, moved to Newport in 2014. She obtained her Bachelor of Business Admin
istration\, specializing in tourism at “La Universidad del Valle de Méxi
co” in Mexico City. Working as an office assistant at San José Church si
nce 2015 she has been working with the Latino community for 6 years. Yol
anda is a founding member of Conexión Latina Newport\, an organization t
hat seeks to educate\, support\, empower and advocate for the Hispanic c
ommunity in Newport. Yoli is a 2023 graduate of Leadership RI and serves
