About this event

Mahler B. Ryder, Jr. was the first Black faculty member in the Illustration Department of the Rhode Island School of Design, where he taught from 1969 to 1992. His art confronted race, identity, and history; expressed joy, sorrow, rage, and love. He insisted that we look honestly at the world and acknowledge its full complexity. Ulli K. Ryder, Ph.D. is a scholar, educator, cultural strategist, and community builder whose work lives at the intersection of race, gender, identity, culture, education, and the arts. She has spent the decades since her father's death trying to understand him, his motivations, and his legacy. Sometimes she feels very close to him. Sometimes he is elusive and unknowable. The result is a rare kind of exhibition: part memorial, part conversation, part inheritance. Two bodies of work, made decades apart, in dialogue.
