About this event

Thursdays on the Stoop is a series of free, virtual skill shares led for and by writers in our community. With topics ranging from generative prompts to editing strategies, these informal sessions are sure to shake up your Thursday routine. RSVP below to get the link. In this free, hourlong session with Marianne Agnes, we will study examples from myth and folklore as a means to write about otherness. Together, we will discuss the monster archetype and how it is used in contemporary writing, review example texts such as Autobiography of Red by Anne Carson, and inhabit the voice of the monster in our own writing. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of genre expansive fiction and playing within the constraints of genre. Writers of all genres and experience levels encouraged to attend. Please familiarize yourself with our Code of Conduct for online events. RSVP Marianne Agnes is a writer and pastor's daughter originally from east Tennessee, now based in Philadelphia. Her work has been supported by the McCormack Writing Center, Sundress Academy, Woodstock Byrdcliffe Artists' Guild, and Monson Arts. She is the recipient of the 2026 City of Philadelphia Illuminate the Arts Grant, the 2025 Ford/Knauth Fellowship for LGBTQIA+ Artists, and the 2022 Austin Clarke Prize for Fiction. Her writing and teaching often explores themes of transness, land, and mysticism. She is currently working on her first novel and it is full of angels.
