About this event
Thursdays on the Stoop is a series of free, virtual skill shares led for and by writers in our community. With topics ranging from generative prompts to editing strategies, these informal sessions are sure to shake up your Thursday routine. RSVP below to get the link. Who writes history? And what is our role in writing it? In this free, hourlong skill share with Raha Rafii, participants will refine the understanding of themselves as the historian of their own lives through the medium of poetry. Through a brief discussion of historical narrative and historiography (the study of sources), reading of selected poems, and writing prompts, participants will learn how to use poetry and other storytelling traditions to preserve and highlight the aspects of their lives that create meaning for them. Writers of all genres are encouraged to attend. Please familiarize yourself with our Code of Conduct for online events. RSVP Raha Rafii is an academic historian of Southwest Asia/North Africa, and has published several academic articles on orientalism, colonialism, and cultural heritage preservation. She first started writing poetry as a PhD student in Philadelphia through a workshop for women and non-binary migrants/immigrants, for which she co-edited a poetry anthology. She has also collaborated on poetry translations into English, and has had her creative non-fiction published in literary and academic journals. Raha currently works as a part-time university lecturer and higher ed labor organizer in New York. Posted In: Free events
