About this event
Milton Suggs is an American vocalist, composer, and storyteller deeply rooted in the African American musical tradition. Known for his rich baritone voice, his style draws from blues, hard bop, soul, and R&B, blending a strong respect for tradition with a distinctly personal and contemporary approach. Born in Chicago and raised in Atlanta, Suggs is a third-generation musician. He began singing and playing music at an early age in church and at school, exploring several instruments, including upright bass, alto saxophone, and drums. After high school, he returned to Chicago, where he studied piano and voice while further developing his craft through jam sessions in the city’s jazz clubs. He later moved to New York, expanding his career as both a performer and educator on the national and international jazz scenes. Throughout his career, Suggs has received significant recognition, including multiple appearances in the Top 10 of DownBeat magazine’s Critics Poll for Rising Star Male Vocalist. In addition to performing, he is known for writing lyrics to compositions originally conceived as instrumental works, bringing a strong sense of storytelling to his collaborations. He has released five albums as a leader. His most recent recording, Pure Intention, received a five-star review from DownBeat. Overall, Milton Suggs is a contemporary jazz vocalist whose artistic identity is firmly grounded in blues and the African American musical tradition, with a particular emphasis on storytelling, lyricism, and connecting the history of the music with the present.
