This month’s pick is open_in_new Beginning Middle End by Valeria Luiselli A mother and daughter, a summer in Sicily, and one enormous question: How do you begin again when the life you thought you were building has fallen apart? With her marriage over and her own mother losing her memory, our narrator travels to Sicily with her daughter, who is standing at the complicated threshold of adolescence. They arrive near ancient ruins where the girl’s great-great-grandmother once worked on an archaeological dig—and soon their attempt at starting over becomes a journey into their family’s past. As mother and daughter cook, read, argue, play chess, explore, and slowly find their footing together, the daughter begins taking control of the story herself. Their travels reach across Sicily and through four generations of women, weaving together family history, mythology, nature, and the people they encounter along the way.
