One evening. Celebrate the centennial birthdays of saxophone icon Stan Getz and Brazilian composer Antônio Carlos Jobim — two artists whose singular genius and historic collaboration transformed jazz forever. From the blazing swing of “Four Brothers” to the timeless elegance of “The Girl from Ipanema” and “Corcovado,” the Charleston Jazz Orchestra captures the warmth, improvisation, and irresistible rhythms that made Bossa Nova a global phenomenon. Featuring vocalist Heather Rice. Concert Length: 90 min (no intermission)[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_separator css=””][vc_empty_space][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”23334″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” css=””][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1785180530417{margin-bottom: 0px!important;}”] About Stan Getz: Stan Getz (1927-1991) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist, known as one of the best musicians of jazz’s “cool school,” and noted for his mellow tone. Getz began studying saxophone at 13 and debuted professionally at 15. His breakthrough came in 1947 as one of Woody Herman’s “Four Brothers,” who specialized in cool-toned modern jazz. In the 1950s, Getz led quartets and quintets. After living in Europe from 1958 to 1961, Getz ushered in the bossa nova era in 1962 after teaming up with guitarist Charlie Byrd to record Jazz Samba, which included their hit recording of “Desafinado.” He collaborated with Brazilian musicians on the album Getz/Gilberto (1963), which became one of the best-selling jazz albums of all time and included the hit song “The Girl from Ipanema”. Also known as “Tom,” Jobim began playing piano at 14 and was inspired by Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos. Initially not wanting to pursue music, he became disenchanted with architecture and devoted himself to music. In 1958, Jobim collaborated with singer-guitarist João Gilberto, and their song “Chega de Saudade” (also known as “No More Blues”) became the first bossa nova single. Jobim collaborated on many albums, such as Getz/Gilberto (1963) and Frank Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim (1967). Some of his popular songs include “One-Note Samba,” “Desafinado,” “Meditação,” “Corcovado,” “The Girl from Ipanema,” “Wave,” and “Dindi”.
