About this event
For the season's haunting theme, we have a sinister selection from Dublin author and academic Ruth Gilligan. Her fourth novel, The Butchers' Blessing, published in 2020, opens with a long-hidden photograph: a slaughterhouse, a meat hook suspended from the ceiling, and a body of a man hanging by his feet. Bouncing between 1996 and present day, the mysterious image conjures the Butchers of Irish folklore — eight fabled men who slaughtered cattle across the country, leaving generations of their families to grapple with their gruesome past.
