LEENALCHI - w/ Underground System (DJ set)

About this event

$28 (or Secret Planet token) General Admission (Standing + limited seating) - Doors open at 7PM https://www.leenalchi.com/ KOREAN PANSORI MEETS THE TALKING HEADS Their line-up is as singular as their sound – featuring two bassists, drums, keys, no guitar, and four singers. The band’s creator and visionary, bassist Young-Gyu Jang, is also behind several beloved horror soundtracks (e.g. The Wailing, Train to Busan), and the now-disbanded iconic art band SsingSsing, which Tiny Desk's Bob Boilen described as "one of my most memorable Tiny Desk Concerts of all time." Leenalchi's (EEE-nal-chi) songs are based on pansori, a traditional style of shamanic storytelling that's been around since the 17th century Joseon Dynasty and is sometimes compared to opera. The band's unique rhythm-forward configuration is a reflection of pansori's typical phrasing — just singing and percussion. The Seoul psych-pop unit channels this structure and explodes it into the club; a dance experience that sounds like animals talking to each other over tripped out bass lines. “Leenalchi has changed the way I think about music, dancing and Korea. I have never heard anything quite like this.” - BRIAN ENO Leenalchi was formed by Young-Gyu Jang 장영규, an award-winning Korean composer who is especially well known for his film scores of some of Korea's most celebrated horror films: Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002), The Wailing (2016), and Train to Busan (2016). As a special bonus to LEENALCHI's 10/31 Halloween set, Secret Planet will partner with Amherst Cinema and Luaka Bop for a late night screening of The Wailing on October 23rd. https://amherstcinema.org/films-and-events/wailing Underground System plays an opening DJ set starting at 7:30. https://www.undergroundsystembk.com/ Contact Us: contact@thedrakeamherst.org #: 413-320-3020 Copyright © 2021 The Drake Developed by Tigerweb 🐯 Follow Us
