About this event

Annie Bloom's Books welcomes Caleb Dardick for a reading from his memoir, The Adventures of Superfreak: My Childhood on the Hippie Trail. Caleb will be joined by Portland author Joshua Safran for a lively conversation about their extraordinary childhoods in the counterculture. From a VW bus journey along the Hippie Trail to unconventional family adventures closer to home, they'll explore the wonder, chaos, and contradictions of growing up with parents determined to live outside society's rules. About The Adventures of Superfreak: In 1970, five-year-old Caleb Dardick crossed continents with his disabled activist parents in search of hashish—or enlightenment—whatever came first. Traveling overland from Amsterdam to India, the family chased freedom across Europe, North Africa, and South Asia in a VW bus. Told through the eyes of a child who becomes "Superfreak" to survive the chaos, this memoir explores attachment, abandonment, disability, and the cost of radical freedom. Caleb Dardick is a storyteller and cultural observer who grew up in the American counterculture. At age five, he traveled the Hippie Trail from Amsterdam to India with his disabled parents. He later lived as part of the back-to-the-land movement in Northern California. He has performed personal stories at the Sierra Storytelling Festival and at Beyond Borders in San Francisco. The Adventures of Superfreak is his debut memoir.
