Nazi crimes continue to cast a long shadow at home and abroad. Germans have nevertheless managed to put their violent, genocidal past behind them, creating a peaceful and prosperous democracy at the heart of Europe. In this refreshing book, Andrew I. Port tells the story of that extraordinary transformation. Tracing the histories of the Eastern and Western halves of postwar Germany in tandem, he highlights their obvious differences and unexpected commonalities. This novel approach explains not only the country's many accomplishments since the fall of the Berlin Wall, but also the challenges it has faced - from the difficulty of unifying two distinct societies to violent forms of xenophobia and the rise of extremist parties. Whether the Federal Republic remains a stable and successful power is the new "German Question" of the twenty-first century. About the Author: Andrew Port is professor of history at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, and the recipient of the DAAD Prize for Distinguished Scholarship in German and European Studies. He has published numerous articles and essays, as well as three books and an edited volume: Conflict and Stability in the German Democratic Republic; Never Again: Germans and Genocide after the Holocaust, which was shortlisted for the 2025 Laura Shannon Prize in Contemporary European Studies; and Becoming East German: Socialist Structures and Sensibilities after Hitler. His latest book, Germany, a brief history of postwar Germany, just appeared with Polity Press. Port served from 2014 to 2019 as Editor-in-Chief of the flagship journal Central European History. About A Woman in Pink: In A Woman in Pink, an unnamed woman recounts her deeply intertwined relationship with Dutch, a man she meets in her twenties and immediately loves. Dutch tells her he has distanced himself from the substance-fueled chaos that once consumed him, while she explains she has left her eating disorder in the past. Together, they convince themselves they’ ve outrun their darkest histories. But over the span of their fifteen-year relationship, those shadows loom large, influencing their bond in ways they never expected. She wants to free herself from the turmoil of addiction. She also wants to believe that Dutch is her Johnny Cash, that she is his June Carter, and that theirs is a great love story. When their histories and choices finally collide, she is forced to confront everything she thought she knew about love, identity, and what it means to truly heal. About the Author: Megan A. Schikora’s short stories and personal essays have appeared in numerous publications, most recently Exacting Clam, Midway Journal, Change Seven, Hidden Peak Press, and F (r)iction, whose 2022 Short Story Contest she won with her story “ Sticks and Stones.” Her debut novel A Woman in Pink was a Writing Award Short List choice for the Page Turner Awards and is forthcoming with Regal House Publishing in 2026. She lives in Michigan with her daughter.
